Happy Spring, Easter & Passover! It’s so good to be home in sunny Los Angeles after a chilly adventure to New York City. Spring is a time for growth and rebirth – a time to shed the old and welcome in the new. As we entered the Chinese Year of the Snake in February, I wish you a year full of renewal and forward movement (the snake cannot move backwards). We will Spring forward with new dance steps, classes & workshops.
Our AfroCaribe dance class in Venice Beach continues to inspire and nourish me. Thank you to creative writer, Khansa Jones who paid a very special homage to our class in her her blog, “The Real Friday Jones.”
I would also like to thank our giving Master teachers, Silfredo La’O Vigo, Juan Carlos Blanco and Richard Marquez for blessing our AfroCaribe Dance Class with your wisdom and grace during the AfroCuban Master Series in March. We honor and value your Culture & Mastery.
I am so happy to resume my regular teaching class schedule this week. See you on the dance floor Mermaids!
Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving! In the spirit of giving thanks, I would like to thank you for gifting me with the ability to share my love of dance with you through my dance DVDs, performances, and classroom instruction. This year, more than ever, I feel the power of community as the backbone of my creativity and the well of inspiration that gives my life meaning and fills me up with love and joy. I am truly grateful for another year filled with incredible dance moments with you.
I am grateful for all the dancers and musicians who show up to class and commit to bringing your very best to the dance floor in Los Angeles, Topanga, Nevada City, Maui and Oakland – my newest home at Capoeira Mandinga! I am equally grateful for the DVD dance community in the US, Germany, Japan, Dubai, Australia, Italy, South Africa, and England for your inspiring letters and messages. I’ve enjoyed corresponding with you and have great hopes of meeting and dancing with you all in person someday – 2013 may be the year!
But wait… 2012 is not over and with 6-weeks remaining in the year, I have prepared an incredible schedule of classes to dance out the year in passion and grace! Below is a schedule of what is in store for us!

December 1, 15 & 29, 2012 – AfroCuban Dance with Kimberly Miguel Mullen with Live Drumming by Richard Marquez
Richard Marquez is a master drummer, percussionist and Omo Aña (Afro-Cuban son of the drum). Raised by a Cuban father and a Syrian mother in Venice Beach, California, Richard picked up his first drum at the age of two. He went on to study extensively with respected masters of both the Afro-Cuban tradition and American classical technique. Working professionally as a drummer and percussionist since the age of 15, Richard’s greatest honor is his 17 years with the late Cuban legend Israel “Cachao” Lopez, creator of the mambo, with whom Richard recorded multiple albums (including three Grammy-winning) and film scores. Richard currently performs live with Cachao’s band, the Cineson All-Stars, as well as with his own trio, Descarga Moderna, embodying both latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms and vocals. Richard has evolved naturally as a teacher. His clients in the continental U.S. include James Caan and Dustin Hoffman.

In 2003, to deepen his knowledge, Mario traveled to Salvador, Bahia, with Viver Brasil to study music, dance and culture with Jose Ricardo Sousa, Daniel Sousa, and Mestre Marivaldo. Additional training includes study of Afro-Cuban drumming with Roberto Viscaino Guillot.
