Holiday Danceletter 2013

Dear Beloved Dance Community,

Let’s give thanks for an abundant year of music, dance, and culture! It’s been an extraordinary year of connection, travel, and expansion. In dance, there is always room to grow and opportunities to discover new things – and so we did.

In our dance classes we transported ourselves. We played with time and dared to be courageous enough to step into the unknown. Learning new dance steps can be scary! But, we danced anyway trusting that the process would be challenging at times. All along knowing that the rewards of feeling our bodies move in ways we didn’t know were possible would be worth the discipline it took to set us free.

We stepped it up! We took our practice to the next level. We grew exponentially and became freer because of it. I hope we can all agree that this year’s dance classes brought clearly the lesson that profound freedom comes from the structure and discipline required in refining technique. Years ago, my revered ballet teacher, Josie Walsh instilled this concept to me in her teachings and I finally get it! Incorporating more discipline and structure in all areas of my life has brought me greater happiness and freedom.

I am grateful to dance for pushing my boundaries and comfort zones in ways that keep my mind, body, and spirit flexible and agile. Dancing keeps me on my toes and makes life’s uncharted territories less daunting.  Life becomes an adventure opening my eyes to greater possibilities.

Warm Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season! We have so much dancing to look forward to in 2014!

Check out my New online dance classes on coming Dec 24th! Also, the anticipated release of my 5th Dance DVD “Latin Groove Let’s Dance” launches in Europe! I’ve also included a look at some highlights from 2013!

Dear Beloved Dance Community,

Happy Spring, Easter & Passover! It’s so good to be home in sunny Los Angeles after a chilly adventure to New York City. Spring is a time for growth and rebirth – a time to shed the old and welcome in the new. As we entered the Chinese Year of the Snake in February, I wish you a year full of renewal and forward movement (the snake cannot move backwards). We will Spring forward with new dance steps, classes & workshops.

Our AfroCaribe dance class in Venice Beach continues to inspire and nourish me. Thank you to creative writer, Khansa Jones who paid a very special homage to our class in her her blog, “The Real Friday Jones.”

I would also like to thank our giving Master teachers, Silfredo La’O Vigo, Juan Carlos Blanco and Richard Marquez for blessing our AfroCaribe Dance Class with your wisdom and grace during the AfroCuban Master Series in March. We honor and value your Culture & Mastery.

I am so happy to resume my regular teaching class schedule this week. See you on the dance floor Mermaids!

November, 2012

Dear Beloved Dance Community,

Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving! In the spirit of giving thanks, I would like to thank you for gifting me with the ability to share my love of dance with you through my dance DVDs, performances, and classroom instruction. This year, more than ever, I feel the power of community as the backbone of my creativity and the well of inspiration that gives my life meaning and fills me up with love and joy. I am truly grateful for another year filled with incredible dance moments with you.

I am grateful for all the dancers and musicians who show up to class and commit to bringing your very best to the dance floor in Los Angeles, Topanga, Nevada City, Maui and Oakland – my newest home at Capoeira Mandinga! I am equally grateful for the DVD dance community in the US, Germany, Japan, Dubai, Australia, Italy, South Africa, and England for your inspiring letters and messages. I’ve enjoyed corresponding with you and have great hopes of meeting and dancing with you all in person someday – 2013 may be the year!

But wait… 2012 is not over and with 6-weeks remaining in the year, I have prepared an incredible schedule of classes to dance out the year in passion and grace! Below is a schedule of what is in store for us!

Lastly, take a moment to check out my new interactive social media friendly, Kimberly Miguel Mullen Website designed by my sophisticated and talented website guru, Peter Harris at Atomic Design Studios. Now it will be easier for us to stay connected and you can “like” and “share” posts from the website to your very own social media networks.

We will dance this Saturday, November 24, 2012! In December, there will be 3 AfroCuban Dance Classes with live drumming by Richard Marquez & 2 AfroBrazilian Dance Classes with live drumming with Mario Pallais! See schedule below!

December 1, 15 & 29, 2012 – AfroCuban Dance with Kimberly Miguel Mullen with Live Drumming by Richard Marquez

Richard Marquez is a master drummer, percussionist and Omo Aña (Afro-Cuban son of the drum). Raised by a Cuban father and a Syrian mother in Venice Beach, California, Richard picked up his first drum at the age of two. He went on to study extensively with respected masters of both the Afro-Cuban tradition and American classical technique. Working professionally as a drummer and percussionist since the age of 15, Richard’s greatest honor is his 17 years with the late Cuban legend Israel “Cachao” Lopez, creator of the mambo, with whom Richard recorded multiple albums (including three Grammy-winning) and film scores. Richard currently performs live with Cachao’s band, the Cineson All-Stars, as well as with his own trio, Descarga Moderna, embodying both latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms and vocals. Richard has evolved naturally as a teacher. His clients in the continental U.S. include James Caan and Dustin Hoffman.

December 8 & 22 – AfroBrazilian Dance Workshop with Kimberly Miguel Mullen with Live Drumming by Guest Percussionist, Mario Pallais presenting XANGO, YEMANJA, SAMBA REGGAE!

Mario Pallais, Director of BatukAxe is an Afro-Brazilian group based out of Los Angeles fusing Brazilian, Latin and Reggae sounds. Mario began his musical training at age seven with Cheremoya Escola de Samba. A year later he began studying with Viver Brasil co-founder Luiz Badaró and Mestre King. In 2003, to deepen his knowledge, Mario traveled to Salvador, Bahia, with Viver Brasil to study music, dance and culture with Jose Ricardo Sousa, Daniel Sousa, and Mestre Marivaldo. Additional training includes study of Afro-Cuban drumming with Roberto Viscaino Guillot. In 2009 he was awarded a Lester Horton Dance Award for best achievement in music for dance with Luiz Badaró and Jose Ricardo Sousa.
